paper + pen

It all began with  some doodles in my school notes. I always liked sketching cartoons in the margins and was particular about my handwriting. The spark for handlettering flew when I saw my church counselor create an image of a tree using words from a verse, and that love for lettering hasn't died since 2014.

100 Day PROJECT

APRIL - JULY 2015

SKILLS: HAND LETTERING, TYPOGRAPHY

I started trying to recreate different fonts, and commited to a 100 day lettering challenge to push myself to start creating my own style and methods. The challenge taught me the fundamentals to typography, lettering, and design in an organic way with just a pen, ruler, and notebook. I learned discipline in practice (and racing against the daylight to take a picture in time before it got dark), patience, and the ever important lesson of how to grow from failed designs.

30 Day VERSE Challenge

APRIL 2016

SKILLS: HAND LETTERING, TYPOGRAPHY

The next year, I came back with a month-long challenge for myself to letter entire verses at a time. The time, discipline, and creativity required increased from the previous year to avoid just using the same script for each day, but it was well worth it at the end. It was great to also see how I was able to form a community on Instagram from my project last year so that I could inspire and be inspired by others this year!
